This pair of tongs shown in the video has two arms connected by a hinge held together by a circular spring. As this pair of tongs is biased open, the two arms will spread wide apart when not in use taking up too much drawer space. The object of this contest is to design a SIMPLE AND ELEGANT locking mechanism that will lock/hold the two arms closed when at rest.

Hello ... Watching the example in the video, I believe you would just need shorter arms ( and consequently a little thinner spring due to shorter scissor movement ) to not take too much drawer space ( in case it's the problem you pointed ) . What exactly you mean by elegant ( as the actual design is already simple ) ?

  The pair of tongs needs a certain length for it to be useful. If its arms spread apart when at rest, this is not desirable as most kitchen drawers are crammed. A locking mechanism that is elegant means a clever, neat and simple way to accomplish this purpose.
