NASA Contest: Storyboard for Six Animations for NASA Human Research Program (HRP)

  • 진행 현황: Closed
  • 상금: $500
  • 응모작 접수(건수): 31
  • 수상자: aSalguez

콘테스트 개요

The goal of this challenge is to create a storyboard for five short (~10 to 20-second) animations that describe what happens to the human body and mind in space to the general public. These animations should depict how the spaceflight environment affects astronauts' 1) anthropometry, 2) fluid shifts, 3) balance control, 4) muscles and 5) bones. A background summary is provided below and careful reading of the attached detailed descriptions is recommended. The winning solution(s) will be developed into animations via separate freelancer activities, for which submitters, and others are eligible to participate.

An additional storyboard, for a total of six storyboards, shall combine all five depictions.

Background

The NASA HRP is challenged with communicating the physiological and psychological adaptations that astronauts undergo during spaceflight. Humans were built for Earth. When astronauts travel into space, their bodies and minds adapt to spaceflight in various ways. Trying to communicate these changes, either to the general public or to NASA leadership (many of whom do not have a medical background) is extremely difficult to do with words, charts and figures. Having a video/animation that would visually depict the changes would be of extreme benefit to our program. Although there are numerous adaptations that the human body and mind undergo in space, for this contest, the five identified below are amenable to short animated clips.

The attached word document provides a description of the desired storyboards in more detail along with example images and topic discussion points. Please start with the document titled “HRP_WOMAN3Notes_9July2019”; all other attachments are supplementary to that document. For more information about HRP: www.nasa.gov/hrp

Solution Requirements
• Storyboard for five approximately 10 to 20-second videos or animations that describe the adaptations a human undergoes during spaceflight to a non-technical audience; i.e., the general public
• Storyboard for the compilation of the five videos or animations that is ~1-minute in length that stitches the five animations together (in a clean fashion)
• Each image of the storyboard should typically have a corresponding section of text or description
• Format should be pdf, illustrator, jpeg or other common image formats
• Depictions shall be anatomically correct so that the researchers/physiologists approve
• Use of the HRP logo is encouraged (artwork provided as attachment)
• The graphics/content can be used as references, but entry submissions shall be all original content or have the ability to provide image rights if the submission is selected.

Evaluation Criteria
• Quality: Does the submission look professional?
• Requirements: Does the submission meet the stated requirements?
• Clarity: Does the submission describe how the human body adapts in the five focus areas in terms understandable by the general public?
• Originality
• Suitability: Is the submission suitable for implementation as a ~1-minute video/animation on a limited budget (e.g., car chases and explosions may exceed our budget)
• Stirs public interest

There may be multiple prizes awarded on this contest. The main winner will be awarded the full prize amount listed. Additional winners may be offered lesser prize amounts depending on the submission (i.e. a high quality or novel submission that only meets a portion of the requirements).
Please note that NASA employees/contractors are not eligible for competing in this contest.

Ok, I'll post at the last moment. My work on this project (prior to the previous extension of this contest) was not to my mind ... I decided to go to 3d modeling for a bigger realism. In 3d this increased the work ... But I will post partial in the last final hour of the contest.

We're seeing a few entries that are missing the requirement of storyboard format. Here is an example of what a storyboard should look like, what elements are contained and the overall purpose for the storyboard. https://design.tutsplus.com/articles/how-to-storyboard-basic-guides-for-aspiring-artists--cms-30962

Hello Rafael, we're looking for something that would be at home on a researchers presentation or on a national geographic video. As for cartoonish, it depends on how cartoony you're talking about. Cartoon animation can be very detailed or can be very abstract, we would prefer something detailed and scientific.

Hello. I've been checking other contents related at NASA HRP and I was wondering if you're looking for an specific style you've worked on before. Something closer to cartoons, maybe more realistic...? I can't wait to work on this project. Thank you very much for the opportunity

no specific style, but please note our previous comment: What we are looking for is something geared towards an older audience. Each individual piece/animation is separate and can be used as b-roll in a short video or could also be used in a professional powerpoint presentation by researchers. The desire for the animations is that they are more scientific in nature, something that would be at home in a textbook or an informational piece featured on NatGeo.

Hi all, apologies for the delay. We're working with Freelancer. They added the skill graphic design and notified Freelancers. With this addition, the contest team has agreed to allow the contest to stay open an additional week. We'll make another post when this has been completed. Apologies, and thank you for your patience with us.

Hello Rafael, thank you for your interest. Please use as many pages as you need for your submission. if you're accustomed to a single frame per page or if it's multiple per page, either will work. we anticipate using 1920x1080 for the final animations. in the lower left-hand corner, the top (beginning) or the tail (end) of the animation.

    Contest Holder,

I’m still hoping that you get what you’re looking for by the time the deadline closes, but on the off chance that you don’t, would you be open to extending the contest, and asking for just the script write-ups at this stage; which would later serve as the bases for both the storyboards and animations? I know that you were clear about making the storyboards a primary focus at this stage, but if the storyboard artists and animators have a script, then they could just focus on the visual renderings and not have to put in as much thought. There’s still time before the official deadline closes, and in theory, a freelancer can give you precisely what you’re looking for at the very end, but I thought by this time there’d be several standout entries that caught your eye.

    Contest Holder,

Assuming there’s little to no change between how things stand now and how things stand at the time of the contest deadline, is it possible for you to accept just six detailed scripts for the “animations” as a valid entry submission?

I’d need to know sooner rather than later, so that I give myself enough time to work on them. If it’s just six detailed scripts, they wouldn’t be crazy difficult for me to figure out; but they wouldn’t be super easy, to the point where I could figure everything out at the very last minute either.

Hello James, for clarification, we are only seeking storyboards, any "scripting" will be in the detail underneath the frames in the storyboard. We apologize for the confusion.

I see. Well, hopefully you get what you’re looking for by the time the deadline closes. I’d suggest inviting freelancers to your contest post, but I’m not sure if the feature is still available.

      https://www.freelancer.com/support/Project/invite-a-freelancer-to-bid-on-your-project

The trick here is in finding freelancers who have a background in storyboard work and are committed enough to do the research that this contest demands.
