You might be better off using the more recent version 3 as opposed to the version 2.5 you're proposing. If you are planning customizations, make a list of the features you require and then I can give you a fair estimate of what is required to do the customizations. Also bear in mind that there is a module library from which you can get modules to further customize the application. Some of those modules are paid for, while others are free. You're right about the core of the application being based on Java, and the development environment can be set up quite quickly so that you can use the Ant build tools to incrementally recompile your changes. But bear in mind that its web front end still requires HTML, CSS etc for customization - for example logos, appearance etc. Scratch out a reply if you'd like to discuss your requirements in greater detail, or even consider alternatives.
