Did you try restarting the EC2 instance from AWS console? That should solve the problem I think... let me know in case it doesn't.

May be your instance was terminated, it was a spot instance and likely reached the end of its life by either being outbid or end of term. I was also having this issue with an instance that was started yesterday. Getting an error trying to ssh in ("Permission denied (publickey)", despite verifying it's the correct key), and then used the telnet to check port 22 and I'm getting the error "nodename nor servname provided, or not known". However, checking the security rules for that instance in the EC2 interface shows port 22 working (green check next to it, I assume that's working). By comparison, I have an old legacy instance that is using a different, also automatically created, security rule. Both have 22 open to 0.0.0.0, but the new one (the one I cannot connect to) has 80 only open to an amazon-elb source. Since connecting with the new instance on port 80 works fine, I'm assuming that difference is inconsequential, and that both should be open on 22. I can ssh to the old instance without any issues.
