I did various IOT projects(Smart Home, Street Light monitoring., etc.). In those projects, the devices are connected (esp8266,esp322, raspberry, Arduino) to AWS IOT for communicating between devices and Interacting with the user. I created a thing in AWS IOT and used the generated key files to establish a connection with IOT broker. I created rules in AWS IOT to control other target devices if the published value is not in the range and also trigger a lambda function if required. I used Shadows to save the device state. For the street light project, I used AWS GREENGRASS and AWS IOT because those lights are in outdoor and the network is not stable. With my experience, i can quickly help you out
