Covestro is launching a new digital B2B commerce platform for chemicals in the course of 2018. For the chemical industry, these platforms are not state of the art and thus represents a huge step forward for their digital transformation. The platform will enable business customers to efficiently purchase standard products online from Covestro’s range of polymers at current market prices. The company expects to sell goods valued at up to one billion euros via the platform by the end of 2019 (Salz 2017, n.p.). In addition to that, Covestro is evaluating whether they will use their platform as a marketplace that is open for other companies as well. Plans include marketing certified basic products and services from other suppliers similar to an amazon marketplace (Salz 2017, n.p.). Since there are a lot of competitive players on the market and since a big part of the competition sits in Asia it is difficult to be aware of all the e-commerce activities on the market. Thus, the goal of this project report will be to analyze the market and broader competitive environment based on a list of competitive firms that will be generated together with the project partner from Covestro. I will tell you which companies you should be analyzed. 4 companies, from these a short status quo analysis, is to be made (who, what do they do exactly, how active are those in e-commerce area) and then a short recommendation for Covestro (per company about 1 DIN A4 page).
