Course name: Nano, bio, synthetic: design in a dynamic environment The purpose of the course is to make a general introduction to new technologies from a material point of departure (nanotechnology, biological materials, synthetic biology, smart materials, etc.). In addition, the course will encourage a principled and ethical discussion of the potential inherent in these technologies for designers and for material culture. The main topics that will be studied in the course will be the deepening of understanding and development A design vision used with new and smart materials. Contents: Nanotechnology, biology, synthetic biology and the implementation of sensors of various types in our living space change the rules of the material-design game and challenge the intuition of the designer as an agent of material culture through new and unfamiliar material fields of knowledge. Therefore, smart materials and interactive systems constitute a space of action that re-examines the field of design. The designer in the post-modern era moves circularly between social generalizations and solving private cases. It bridges the multiplicity of languages of the various team members involved in the design process (engineers, architects, representation designers and different subcontractors, each with their own language) and functions as a spiral mediator between usability, technology, material and culture. Also, the course will discuss ethical questions arising from the development of new technologies (the blurring of the boundary between inanimate and living) , privacy in use and the like). The course will encourage a discussion on the impact of these technologies on various aspects of the design field, and will open a discussion on a vision for design in changing technological conditions and in interactive environments: objects made of smart materials that respond to us, monitoring physiological characteristics, implementing control systems, "Up Bottom instead of Down Top" and the like.
