We need someone to improve our software development and IT operations process by employing a modern Continuous Integration/Continuous Development (CI/CD) solution. We are a virtual development team using PC’s running LAMP stack packages on Windows, Linux and MacOSX. The web application uses the CakePHP framework with libraries for photos an PDF generation. The staging and production servers are remotely hosted dedicated servers running Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP. The staging server runs git pull every few minutes via cron. The production server gets updated via manual git pull. The database is on a separate database server. Jira and Bitbucket are used to manage issues and source control. Challenges 1. Some bugs do not occur in all environments due to differences in configuration. 2. Most tests are repetitive and time-intensive which are prone to mistakes. 3. Deploying to production takes over an hour due to the increasing number of test cases. 4. Previously fixed issues may be reintroduced but unable to be detected by current tests. Requirements 1. Improve the overall speed and reliability of deployments by at least 10%. 2. Have the ability to automatically test for a list of bugs we have selected. 3. Isolate and secure internal data and guarantee the integrity of the site. 4. Have the option to queue issues for manual deployment. 5. Have satisfactory documentation of instructions and maintenance. I have 5 year experience in DevOps and I am familiar with CICD orchestration tools such as jenkins, gitlab ci, azure devops, semaphore ci, codeship, Travis CI, and zuul, and IaC tools such as ansible, and terraform. I have been operating several k8s, and docker swarm clusters, and have been writing and managing dozens of CICD pipelines. As you know, main factor is the automation in DevOps principle and practice. - Hook the code commit(No need to pull periodically, but only pull when the code is updated and pushed) - test automation(It maybe involves much stuff to write test scenarios to replace the manual tests) - because the target project is php, build is not complex, some dependency resolution - data synchronization (if needed. Because the data difference between staging and prod envs are a big factor leading the different result) - light weight runtime environment Use docker for the developer environment, but need to consider using docker for the staging and prod env. Because the prod environment can be vary according to the users, and staging must be same with prod env as long as possible. The ideal pipeline is the whole automation. So we have to review the current development lifecycle and pipeline to automate much more steps. Of course, step by step. Then select the CICD orchestrator which will orchestrate all steps. Your diagram gives the conceptual flow enough. Let's discuss the details. Regards.

Instead of trying to propose from start I'd like to start a conversation first and maybe you will like what I'm saying so we can continue. I will start from challenges: all your issues with tests come from one major issue: "separation of concerns" principle is either not really used OR can't be used given limitations of framework or platform you use. I think isolated testing and isolation of business logic parts will save you a lot of test time. As for Requirements: > 1. Improve the overall speed and reliability of deployments by at least 10%. Given that we split logic to test each piece individually, we'll cut time by removing repetitive tests. Also, I'd use Bitbucket Pipelines, since you already use Bitbucket. > 2. Have the ability to automatically test for a list of bugs we have selected. This can be done with flags through env variables or some test specifiers. The same way you can do it in IntelliJ IDEA, when running specific tests. > 3. Isolate and secure internal data and guarantee the integrity of the site. Not sure what this means... > 4. Have the option to queue issues for manual deployment. Again, Bitbucket Pipelines setup can help you with that. > 5. Have satisfactory documentation of instructions and maintenance. I was a core Node.js contributor some time ago and refined lots of Node.js docs.
