If you use esp8266, you will need only the OLED and the VCNL4010. Esp8266 is a WiFi enabled 32bit mcu so you can get real-time clock from the Internet. Pls notice that SR04 is ultrasonic sensor and we don't need it here. You don't need any hard button either - the timezone can be configured by access to the esp8266 web server. Moving to esp8266 also add the advantage: in future, if you want to add more functionality, for example: display birthday message, display weather information, etc... The cost in my bid include software development for esp8266 only. No prototype building nor shipment - if you want that, I can do it but with extra cost. Hello! I'm an expert with the Arduino and the underlying hardware (Atmel AVR) as well as many electronic sensors and communication protocols. I think I understand the goals of your project and I'd be happy to help you develop it further. If you wanted to make the device more compact, it would be possible to switch out the Arduino for an AVR chip without all the arduino's support circuitry. This would give you a smaller circuit board to work with. I'd definitely recommend this along with swapping out the Adafruit "Branded" sensors for their underlying components if you're looking to turn this into a commercial product. I've worked with the HC-SR04 as a low-cost ultrasonic sensor in robotics, but I'm not so sure on the role in your device. The proximity/light sensor would be adequate for checking when a container is placed on top of the device, and ultrasonic sensors usually have a minimum working distance of ~5cm anyways. There are a lot of other parameters to the design of this sort of device, such as power/batteries, enclosures etc. but I'd be happy to provide as much or as little input as you need.
