Slider Code Optimization

I've hacked a jquery slider to fit my needs so the code is terrible now and I would like you to maintain the functions but reduce code and make it more obvious (comment) what to change in order to:

- make slider faster

- gab between edge and first/last element

- how many images are jumped by a click

- where the slider starts

I know there's jcarousellite but I prefer a custom version.

Oh and I wont need resizing functions (center image bigger than rest), I think there still are a lot of leftovers in the code from that.

Code should be as minimal as possible and well commented.
