I'm a senior Linux system admin, in the business since 2006, and in short, optimization is one of my passions.. For more information, please take a look at my profile and feedback. As for the issue - MySQL is usually the first bottleneck, then the rest of the php-web stack, but with a proper audit over SSH, I would surely be able to optimize to get the last bit if power out of the VPS box. You say that it was allright for a while, and then it went downhil. This is intersting, and resemles of something else but just an optimization issue. Did you have any change of number of visitors, _or in the code_ - whatever that could infuelce the pressure on the service? Also, google analytics might not pick up all the generated visits (talking of malicious ones). Did you try to use some server leve software to determine the network load?
