The operating system macOS, also known as OS X from 2012 to 2015 and Mac OS X from 2011 to 2012, is one that Apple introduced. It is based on a graphical user interface. the primary operating system of the machine. StatCounter figures from August 2018 show that macOS has an use share of 12.65% among desktop operating systems, placing it second to Windows (82.51%) [10].
The last iteration of the Classic Mac OS, Mac OS 9, was replaced by macOS in 1999. The desktop edition of Mac OS X 10.0 "Cheetah" was published on March 24, 2001, and the first version of macOS Server, Mac OS X Server 1.0, was released in 1999. "OS X Mountain Lion" was the first operating system to adopt the new moniker, which Apple gave to Mac OS X in 2012. Before OS X Mavericks was released in June 2013, macOS versions were given names based on large cats, such as "Mountain Lion" for Mac OS X v10.8. However, since the release of OS X Mavericks, names have begun to reference famous California sites. In order to maintain consistency with the names of Apple's other operating systems, iOS, watchOS, and tvOS, OS X was renamed to macOS in June 2016. On June 7, 2020, following Apple's announcement of the beginning of Mac migration to the AppleSilicon platform, the first macOS Big Sur to support AppleSilicon was made available. The most recent version is macOS Ventura, which will debut on June 6, 2022 at WWDC22.
With the exception of the workgroup management and management software tools that are included, macOS Server, which was also released at the same time in 2001, is architecturally identical to the workstation (client) version and offers streamlined access to crucial network services like email Transport Server, Samba software, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol server, and Domain Name System. Additionally, there are many authorisation types.
Two key components make up macOS: The Darwin core was created by Apple in collaboration with the independent developer community and is based on the BSD source code and the Mach microkernel.
