For this report, you must choose what type of business or organisation you work for from options 1) and 2) below:
1) You are employed in the Communications Team of a multinational business, which is currently merging with another multinational business (e.g. banks or any other multinational corporation/company in a different industry). As a result, management is considering rearranging teams of employees across the two businesses.
2) You are employed in the Communications Team of a multinational organisation, which is currently uniting with another multinational organisation to complete a substantial project together (e.g. non-governmental organization- UNICEF, International committee of Red Cross, Humans Rights Watch, etc.). As a result, management is considering rearranging teams of employees across the two organisations.
For whatever type of business or organisation you have chosen, you have to write a report for the following imaginary but realistic scenario:
Report Scenario:
You have been asked by the Head of the Communications Team to write a research-based report on the advantages and disadvantages of establishing teams in two different ways in the future for communication. You must discuss the communication advantages and disadvantages for teams of both of the following options:
A) grouping employees in teams based on their national language (e.g. national teams)
B) grouping employees in multinational teams using English as a Lingua Franca (international teams).
Your report’s purpose is to present the information in an unbiased and objective way, so that senior management can make informed decisions as to how to organise teams in
the future. It is not clear whether everyone in both Multinationals speak English and to what degree, and what languages other employees speak, hence the need for this report and research from other business and organisational contexts by management to inform future decision-making.
You will need to research academic and organisational literature written on team communication, multilingualism and the use of English as a lingua franca in organisations, drawing on at least 10 sources including a minimum of 3 peer-reviewed sources to support your discussion. At the end of your research and writing the report, you will need to make some recommendations to senior management based on your discussion of advantages and disadvantages for communication.
You must focus this report on specific businesses or organisations and this must be explicit in your introduction and terms of reference. You may choose a specific business/organisation (or create an imaginary company with particular characteristics), but these characteristics must be clear in your introduction and terms of reference. The specific businesses/organisations must be multinational in nature. Using the specific businesses and organisations that you have chosen, use what you have learned to write your report on this imaginary but realistic scenario of merging/uniting together to achieve some goal (e.g. merger or project).
It is very important that the lecturer is clear about the type of organisation you are discussing and how your analysis of communication advantages and disadvantages is designed for this organisation. If you have any questions about your business or organisation, please discuss it with your lecturer before you start.
