As a major assignment for the course, your Class Paper is designed for you to demonstrate your skills and knowledge in applying class terms and concepts to the research, interpretation, and critique of a specific example of visual culture in American society from the last 100 years. I am open to the actual medium, but here are your major areas:
a photograph;
short film, or video (no more than 4-5 minutes);
painting, sculpture, or conceptual art;
a scene from film, TV show, or video; (no more than 4-5 minutes);
short animated cartoon;
advertisement or commercial;
brand logo
As we go through the term, you will acquire and build on the skills and criteria for completing your assignment in any number of key areas, i.e., design and composition; context, culture, and history; plot, story, cinematography; semiotic and psychological analyses, typography; color theory; etc.
Although this is not primarily a research assignment, you are required you do some online and library research into your subject, e.g., what were the background and stated goals of the creator(s); how was the art or product received? For whatever research you do, ALL sources must be credited, most especially any paraphrases or direct quotes (keep to a mininum).
The assignment calls for a 6-7 page, double-spaced paper, not including any inserted photos or illustrations. You must include at least one photo or accurate representation from your specific subject matter, and/or Internet link.
Please submit your paper topic with a few sentences of elaboration by no later than Friday, 3/17 so I may review and approve them. Papers are due in class Friday, 4/14. You will be able to pick the visual culture example from a list I will provide the winner
