What is it that you are trying to achieve? You want a number to be prefixed by zeros so that the length of the string is 12? There are a number of functions that can do this - however using string function should not crash the database. I would like to see a copy of the file - the crash might be related to something else. You should also check the Field length and existance. So, the query should make sure the field length less than 12 and it has value. That's it and your current code will work

It sounds like a small issue you are having. Provided the database is not corrupted I am sure I can help you with a work around, maybe even using VBA directly if needed. I have worked a lot with SQL and Access so I know I can help. I just did an Access app for someone last week too (document management system)
