I have done a similar academic project on the third year of my undergraduate studies in electrical and electronics engineering. In the project we designed and constructed a prototype of a driver less car from scratch. We were a team of four. The car was able to take its initial position and final position as inputs and then it calculated the shortest path on its own using A* algorithm. Then the motor and drive control algorithm were activated to drive the car to its final location. We used stepper motors, ultrasonic sensors for obstacle avoidance. We use the raspberry pi 3 as the micro-controller and did our coding in python. I am willing to share all the codes with you and provide you our project report if you are willing to do it this way.
