In a combined cycle power plant, hot exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine is used to drive a steam turbine for electricity generation. The electrical output of the internal combustion engine is 1000 kW and the fuel consumption is 270 L/h. The density and the calorific value of the fuel are 875 kg/m3 and 44000 kJ/kg, respectively. Hot exhaust gases from the engine at 450 °C and 150 kPa enter the exhaust gas boiler at a rate of 5.5 kg/s and leaves at 120 °C to the atmosphere. The boiler efficiency is to be taken as 95%. The exhaust gas boiler is a heat exchanger with an overall heat transfer co-efficient of 1780 W/m2.K. The steam generated from the exhaust gas boiler enters a steam turbine at 350 °C and 4 MPa and leaves at 20 kPa with a moisture content of 5%. The steam leaves the condenser at saturated liquid. The mass flow rate of the steam is 0.75 kg/s. Assuming an isentropic efficiency for the pump of the Rankine cycle is 0.85%. The inlet water temperature to the condenser is 25 °C and the exit temperature of the water is 65 °C. Use constant specific heat properties. Specific heat of water is 4.18 kJ/kg.K. Air properties can be used for exhaust gases if needed. Kinetic and potential energy and exergy are negligible. The dead state properties are taken as 25 °C and 101 kPa. Determine: (i) the net power output from the steam turbine by recovering waste heat (units: kW), [Marks= 15%] (ii) the combined cycle power output (ICE and steam turbine) (units: kW), [Marks= 5%] (iii) Overall efficiency (units: %), [Marks= 5%] (iv) the exergy of the exhaust gas entering the boiler (units: kW), [Marks= 5%] (v) the exergy output of the exhaust gas leaving to the boiler (units: kW), [Marks= 5%] (vi) the exergy destruction in the exhaust gas boiler (units: kW) [Marks= 15%] (vii) the exergy input to the turbine (units: kW) [Marks= 5%] (viii) the exergy destruction in the turbine (units: kW) [Marks= 15%] (ix) the exergy destruction in the condenser (units: kW) [Marks= 15%] (x) the log mean temperature difference (units: °C) and the heat transfer area (units: m2) of the exhaust gas boiler [Marks= 7.5 +7.5%]
