(Use a finite element computer program: i.e. ANSYS Mechanical APDL) 1. Solve the plane stress problems shown in Fig. 1 using three different mesh divisions. Plot the normal stress (σx) versus y-coordinate for the following locations: • X = 0 • X = 6 mm • X = 30 mm • X = 56 mm Write a brief report summarizing your findings and include an evaluation of the performance of each mesh. Goal of this exercise: To understand the influence of boundary conditions on the finite element solution of elastic problem. To understand the effect of the mesh on the solution. Test the Saint-Venant’s Principle. 2. Solve the plane stress problem shown in Fig. 2 using three different mesh divisions. Compare your deformation (at neutral fiber) and stress (normal and shear) results with values obtained from elementary beam theory. Plot the normal stress (σx) and shear stress (τxy) versus y-coordinate for the following locations: • X = 0 • X = 6 mm • X = 30 mm • X = 56 mm Write a brief report summarizing your findings and include an evaluation of the performance of each mesh. Goal of this exercise: To understand the influence of boundary conditions on the finite element solution of an elastic problem. To understand the effect of the mesh on the solution.
